(Editor's Note: Here are a few notes on Newman from Earl Gandel who, with his wife Cathie, ran the Bridgehampton Race circuit out on Long Island for many years.) I operated Bridgehampton Race Circuit from 1971-'84, which pretty much spanned the period Paul Newman was getting his training and started in serious road racing. We kind of borrowed his celebrity when we knew he was registered for an SCCA National -- we would leak to the local papers who "P.L. Newman" really was. On a very minor local scale, it created some stir. In this crowd of racecar drivers, Paul Newman was just another car guy! Can you spot him?
My favorite story is about Carl Jensen, our superintendent/caretaker, who had run the physical track facilities since the mid-'60s. His Saturday night job was as projectionist at the Bridgehampton Drive-In. One day during practice for an SCCA National, he sidled up next to Paul Newman and said, "You know, we're in the same business". Paul said, "You mean racing?" And Carl said, "No, movies."
